Lately i’ve been looking at editorial archives in hopes of drawing some inspiration for an upcoming native inspired editorial shoot. I have found it hard to find anything that manages to successfully pull off the native concept without being too literal.

i find myself most often drawn to candid photography mostly for it’s ability to capture something uniquely raw and of the moment is in true essence [in my opinion] what photography was meant for; to capture and record a moment in time. unfortunately, in this digital age we are mostly bombarded with the faux…posed+edited//chopped&cropped images that are so manipulated they generally do no appeal to my senses. i am also most fond of the nostalgia of the instant polaroid. its lack of luster & pretentiousness. the perfectly-sized white framed square. the gritty & grimy quality it offers. and of course the instant feature [for the impatient] which leads me to dash snow…

known best for capturing the NYC underground art culture with his valiant polaroids, controversial art installations & graffiti crew irak… dash snow in my opinion was a genius far ahead of his time and such a tragic loss. hailing from family of french aristocracy, dash took the low road and gave them the finger to pursue a life on the streets plagued with poverty & drug addiction. he started taking photos as a means of memory during times of inebriant blackouts. each snap shot documents a time, a place and seems to evoke a somewhat uncomfortable emotion. his photos served as a medium for him to glimpse into his life from the outside in the most voyeuristic sense. instances of illicit acts involving sex, violence, drugs and poverty were documented by him in a uniquely insightful and honest fashion. there was such a poetic beauty within the degenerate, futile and raunchy life he lead.

“the images now seem like stills from the film of his frantic life. the diary of a beautiful loser”.
